TIHRAD participated in the 4th International Symposium on Streptococcus agalactiae Disease (ISSAD 2026), held from 23–25 February 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya.
ISSAD is a global conference dedicated to advancing research and collaboration on Group B Streptococcus (GBS), a major cause of maternal and newborn infections worldwide. The symposium brought together over 300 delegates from more than 37 countries, including researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and public health professionals working to address GBS-related disease and improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
At the conference, TIHRAD Program Manager, Rashidat Yusuf, presented an abstract titled:
“Knowledge, Awareness and Perceived Priority of Group B Streptococcus Among University Health Science Students and Recent Graduates.”
The research explored the level of awareness and perceived importance of Group B Streptococcus among health science students and recent graduates, highlighting important considerations for strengthening education, awareness, and preparedness among future health professionals.
The symposium featured discussions on several key areas related to GBS prevention and maternal–newborn health, including:
- the global burden and surveillance of Group B Streptococcus
- genomic and epidemiological research
- vaccine development and evaluation
- advances in diagnostic tools
- implementation science and health system responses
- policy pathways for improving prevention strategies
Participants also explored strategies for translating scientific evidence into practical interventions aimed at preventing GBS infections among mothers and newborns.
Beyond presenting research, the conference provided opportunities for networking and collaboration. Rashidat Yusuf engaged with researchers, public health practitioners, and representatives from various national and international organizations working in maternal and newborn health.
Participation in ISSAD 2026 reflects TIHRAD’s continued commitment to contributing to global research discussions and advancing knowledge on infectious diseases affecting vulnerable populations.
TIHRAD (Triad Institute for Health Research and Development) is committed to advancing research, policy translation, and capacity building to address pressing public health challenges across Africa.
