TIHRAD Announces Winners of the WAAW Essay Contest Organized in Collaboration with ASM

TIHRAD, in collaboration with the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), is pleased to announce the winners of the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) Essay Contest.

The essay contest was launched in November 2025 during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, as part of TIHRAD’s efforts to promote awareness and critical engagement with the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). 

The competition invited undergraduate students in Nigeria to submit essays under the theme “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” The essay explored the question: “How can artificial intelligence improve global health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)?

The results of the competition were officially announced on 21 February 2026 during TIHRAD’s Academic and Essay Writing Webinar, which brought together participants to discuss academic writing, research communication, and the role of young scientists in addressing global health challenges.

Following a review process, the winners of the essay contest are:

  • First Position

Abdulbaseet Yusuff

  • Second Position

Torsen Saameer Kasmir 

  • Third Position

Agboyinde Daniel & Khadijah Sanuth

TIHRAD congratulates the winners and commends all participants for their thoughtful contributions to the discussion on antimicrobial resistance. The winning essays will also be published on the TIHRAD website to further promote dialogue and learning on this important public health issue.
